Schools offer alternative to dropping out
The Jan. 13 article “MPS graduation, dropout rates up” stated that many of Milwaukee Public Schools’ high school dropouts are “enrolled at small alternative schools, which generally have much higher dropout rates than the main body of large high schools in MPS.” This assertion merits clarification.
Alternative schools, by definition, enroll at-risk students who have chosen these schools as an alternative to dropping out. The fact is, small alternative schools retain and graduate many at-risk students who would otherwise have dropped out of school altogether.
If these alternative schools did not exist, the dropout rates at the big MPS high schools would be much higher than they are.
